WashéBridging Indigenous Sounds with Modern Technology
In an ever-changing musical landscape, Venezuelan musician and researcher Washé stands out by intertwining the ancient with the modern. Dedicated to preserving and reinterpreting the ancestral music traditions of Venezuela's indigenous communities, he creates immersive soundscapes that honor his cultural heritage while embracing contemporary techniques. Washé's work is a testament to the spiritual and cultural importance of sound, blending field recordings with electroacoustic innovation.
We joined Washé on an expedition into the Amazon basin to learn more about his work and approach, assisted by the BeatStep Pro and MiniFuse 2.
Keeping tradition alive
Through his project Armonías Frecuenciales, Washé explores the profound relationship between sound and well-being. His direct experiences with indigenous peoples like the Wayuu, Pemón, and Ye'kuana have enriched his understanding of their music and culture. By integrating traditional instruments and chants with modern recording and performance techniques, he brings awareness to these cultures with the aim of replicating his own experience, and ensuring their sounds resonate with new generations.
Notable other projects include live performances that fuse field recordings from indigenous ceremonies with ambient electronic layering in order to engender transformative experiences for his audiences. Washé’s educational workshops further extend his mission, where he teaches about the spiritual significance of the traditions he has come to revere through his work.
This mixture leads me to imagine having been in those places and being able to replicate as close as possible… that experience to all spectators.
With powerful recording and performance tools
For Washé, technology is a bridge between the past and the future, between nature and newfound creative possibilities. The Arturia BeatStep Pro has become an essential component of his workflow, providing “comfort and ease to be able to create and develop sound design". The sequencer allows him to craft complex rhythms that echo indigenous patterns while exploring new sonic territories.
For his live performances and field recording, the MiniFuse 2 offers unparalleled reliability, control and sound quality. MiniFuse ensures that every nuance of the landscape around him is captured and his compositions are delivered with pristine clarity, allowing his audience to fully immerse themselves in the experience.
It has really be a great element within my live set.
A Personal Connection
Washé's artistic journey combines ethnomusicological preservation with sonic exploration and field recording. By marrying indigenous sounds with modern technology, he not only honors the deep cultural roots of Venezuela's indigenous communities but also makes them accessible to a wider audience. His work embodies Arturia's vision which encourages the limitless exploration of sound, whether from a high-rise bedroom studio or rainforest basin. Through his innovative approach, Washé invites us all to delve into a rich tapestry of sound, inspiring a deeper connection with the world's diverse musical heritage.
“We have a journey of long roads, even days of sailing, but it is totally worth it. Thus it is a very magical place with an organic natural orchestra.”
