SAMULI KEMPPImeets MatrixBrute
Samuli Kemppi is a Helsinki-based producer, DJ, radio host, promoter, label owner and a record pusher. We headed over to Finland to meet the man himself.
In The Beginning
Kemmpi began producing music shortly after he started buying records and in 1996 one of his tracks was played on the radio which changed things for him forever. It got him into music making, taking it more seriously, and learning his craft.
Years later, with him being a music fanatic, he set up his own radio show. The show, Deep Space Helsinki, which is hosted alongside Juho Kusti is one of the most important and influential house and techno radio shows in which they look to broaden the musical perspectives of their listeners. A record label of the same name releases music by Kemppi and other artists.
"I had some gear in the 90’s but I was so sure nobody was ever going to use hardware again when I moved to working with the DAW, but how wrong was I?"
Samuli now has a studio full of hardware, trying not to rely on the computer but hands-on with the synthesizers and various machines.
"With MatrixBrute, I like the idea that it’s like a modular system, the functionalities are there, but then the beautiful part is you can patch stuff pretty much the same way as a modular system."
"When I’m recording it’s a live take. Always. I arrange and record everything live. The track happens once and it also records all the mistakes and that’s what life is about, life isn’t clean – there’s scratches and surface noise in everyone’s life so, these small mistakes, they make everything sound more human."
"MatrixBrute is quite flexible so I use it for bass sounds, lead or just effects or weird bleeps or bloops in the background."
